Confetti Nineties techno
fused with seventies disco at a corporate holiday event co-produced
by The Perfect Palate and John Murray Productions, both of San Francisco.
Called "Futuristic Playground," the rave-like event, held on several
floors of San Francisco's Townsend Center office complex, combined
sleek, minimalist decor with virtual reality games, light shows and
performance art - all set to a pulsating disco beat.
After cocktails in the lower lobby, attendees were
led upstairs to the building's atrium, where an all-white color palette
dominated the decor. The focal point of the space - an elevator shaft
- was draped in white fabric, creating a giant canvas for colorful,
moving light projections achieved through a kaleidoscope projector.
A rotating mobile of giant white balloons was suspended from the atrium
ceiling and served as another canvas for the light projections. Tables
and chairs were covered in white spandex. Simple centerpieces of cobalt-blue
vases and Gerber daisies added spots of color to the all-white tables.
Three foodstations, designed by Los Angeles-based Atom Smashers, featured
brushed aluminum bases topped with Lucite tables underlit with colorful
neon tubes.
An all-white dance floor made by John Murray was
accented by a hand-painted image reminiscent of a Keith Haring painting.
On stage, the seventies disco-funk band SuperBooty performed, as did
the City Slam Dancers. During the latter's performance, several corporate
executives appeared onstage dressed as The Village People and sang
along with the band's disco anthem, YMCA.
"We brought the seventies into the future for this
event," says The Perfect Palate's Petrina Rosholt of the neo-retro
theme. Murray adds, "I'm sure that in the future, we'll all still
be dancing to seventies disco." Play that funky music!
